TIKAPUR, Jan 21: A man in Janaki Rural Municipality-7 of Tikapur apparently committed suicide after hacking his wife to death with an axe on Sunday. However, police are not convinced that he committed suicide and have taken five persons under custody for investigation.

Prem Lal Chaudhary, 35, of Golauri allegedly struck his wife with an axe on her head and then killed himself too. According to police, Chaudhary's neighbors tied him with a rope after he killed his wife. During police interrogation, the neighbors stated that they tried to bring him under control fearing that he would attack others as well.

The couple had a dispute following which they started fighting since early morning. Neighbors had even gathered in front of their home in order to resolve their dispute. After being convinced by the neighbors, Chaudhary agreed to stop fighting and entered into his house. Later, the villagers heard his wife screaming and rushed for help.

By the time they broke into the house, they found his wife dead while Chaudhary was trying to hang himself with a rope. DSP Shiva Bahadur Singh of Area Police Office (APO), Tikapur informed Republica that neighbors had tied Chaudhary with a rope. When police reached the incident site, he was found to be unconscious.

Chaudhary was immediately rushed to Tikapur Hospital for treatment where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

The couple's son Subash, 15, told police that his father kept attempting suicide even after being taken under control. DSP Singh further said that there was a bruise around his neck and was releasing foam from his mouth.

"We are waiting for the postmortem report to find out more details of the incident," said DSP Singh, adding, "Though people claim it's a suicide, we cannot say anything until the report is out.”

Police, nevertheless accepted that there were no wounds or bruises in other parts of the body to suggest foul play.

As per the statements given by the arrested people, Chaudhary had been behaving strangely since the last few days. It has been learnt that he was threatening the family members that he would kill them and commit suicide. The couple has two sons.

The house where the incident occurred belongs to the in-laws of Chaudhary. He is originally from Joshipur Rural Municipality-1. It had been three months since the family had shifted to Golauri.
