KATHMANDU, May 31: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Renu Kumari Yadav on Tuesday said that there is no possibility of operating monorail, metro railways and cable car in the Kathmandu valley.

At a time when a section of politicians are making promises to build these much-hyped infrastructures, Minister Yadav has ruled out the possibility of constructing infrastructures like monorail, metro railways and cable car in the Kathmandu valley. “The concept of monorail operation in Kathmandu Valley should be removed completely from the agenda of the government,” said Yadav, while addressing a meeting of the parliament committee on Development and Technology.

Operation of monorail and cable car in Kathmandu Valley has long been under discussion at the government level. Earlier, France had proposed to construct a cable car in Kathmandu Valley.

France, in its detailed feasibility study report, had shown the possibility of operating cable cars on four routes of Kathmandu at an investment of Rs 15 billion. The report proposed the first cable car route from Kalimati to Boudhanath via Basantapur-Ratna Park-Dilli Bazaar--Bhandarkhal-Chabahil. Similarly, Gongbu to Balaju-Sohrakhutte-Kalimati-Balkhu-Tribhuvan University was another identified route for the operation of cable cars.

The study also stated that cable cars could be operated from Kalanki to Ratna Park via Teku-Thapathali and from Lagankhel to Pulchowk-Thapathali-Ratna Park.

Minister Yadav also declined the possibility of operating metro railways inside the ring road area of Kathmandu Valley. “The government will not be able to take heavy financial liability to compensate landowners while constructing the metro railways in this area,” she said.
