KATHMANDU, April 25: Speaking at a special function to celebrate the 8th anniversary of Nepal Republic Media (NRM) and honor Nagarik Heroes 2074, NRM Executive Director Sambridhi Gyawali said that the emergence of Nepal’s private media houses, both during the 1990 revolution and the 2006 popular movement, paved the way for private sector initiatives to become an important voice of the people. It was in 1990, the year of restoration of democracy in Nepal, that Hem Raj Gyawali got involved in the first commercial private newspaper, which became the voice of the people.

Similarly, Executive Director Gyawali said that it was again in 2006 that NRM was founded to support and defend the federal democratic republic. She further said the public discourse on federalism was still in its infancy when NRM started two regional papers Purbeli and Paschimeli, the first regional newspapers started by a national daily in Nepal.

On the occasion, Executive Director Gyawali announced two more regional papers with two additional print sites in Pokhara and Butwal in the next three months which will then make NRM the largest network media in Nepal. She highlighted the need for a cohesive platform focusing on both regional and local news for a comprehensive understanding of developmental complexities of the country.

Hem Raj Gyawali officially launched Radio Nagarik 96.5, NRM’s newest media outlet. Executive Director Gyawali highlighted that Hem Raj always put people first and worked tirelessly to safeguard Nepal’s democracy by establishing two largest media houses after two popular movements.
