Udayapur locals worried more about farming than casting votes

UDAYAPUR, Nov 17: As the upcoming elections have fallen in the harvesting season, farmers are more worried about harvesting their crops than listening to the exaggerated promises of candidates and casting votes for them.

Candidates contesting the upcoming provincial and parliamentary elections are visiting the farmers in the latter’s farms and asking them to vote for them. But the farmers who are busy harvesting the crops, are worried about wasting time while listening to the exaggerated plans of the candidates.

This time around, the farmers are not willing to dedicate their precious time to listening to candidates appealing for votes. For them, even a day’s delay in harvesting their paddy yield could lead to a big loss. They do not want to take the chance and risk.

“In the mean time of harvesting, I feel it inappropriate to listen to the pretentious talks of the politicians,” Jagat Bahadur Rai, a local of Ashari, said. “Firstly, win the election and work for the development of the people and the country and only then visit me to talk about your work.” 

When he tells this to the candidates, they just smile and walk away to next place, said Rai.

Many of the farmers stated that due to the hectic agricultural work in the upcoming elections, they are unable to lend ear to the proposal of political parties and attend the political conferences in the village. 

“Earlier, in the midst of the cultivation season, the local election was held. Likewise, upcoming election is in the midst of another harvesting season,” said Jhagaru Chaudhary, a local of Motigada, Gaighat. 

Similarly, Ambar Dhoj Karki of Tripana 9, said, “Although I like to listen to them but crops are more important than talks.” 

Meanwhile, the candidates of different political parties have been meeting the locals either informing them about their visits in advance or directly visiting them in their fields.
