KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Monica Bhattarai Adhikari, Vice Chairperson of the Social Welfare Council (SWC), has resigned from the post. She is the daughter-in-law of former Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens (MoWCSC) Uma Regmi.

Adhikari is a US PR (Permanent Residence Permit) holder. She was appointed as the vice Chairperson of the SWC while she was a US PR holder. She was appointed despite there being a legal provision that a person with a foreign PR cannot hold any position in a public office.

Her mother-in-law, former minister Regmi, appointed her as the vice-chairperson of the SWC. This decision was opposed by the majority. A complaint was lodged with the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and the MoWCSC stating that Vice-chairperson Adhikari had taken PR of US. She has therefore resigned.

“I heard that she has resigned from the MoWCSC informally,” said Sanjay Kumar Mallik, Information Officer of SWC.

Although she has resigned, her name still needs to be removed from the website as vice-chairperson of the SWC.
