734 freed haliya rehabilitated

MARTADI, July 27: A total of 734 former Haliya families have been rehabilitated through the Freed Haliya Rehabilitation Program in Bajura.

The Haliya is a form of bonded labour, practiced in the region, which is now outlawed. Rehabilitation of all the families that had acquired the identity card has been completed. So far, 1,633 freed haliyas have been identified and certified in the district. Of them, 734 families have been rehabilitated, according to Chief District Officer Ganga Prasad Neupane.


Thirty more families are to be rehabilitated. So far, Rs. 140.3 million has been spent under the program. The rehabilitation program began in the fiscal year 2069/70. The haliyas were liberated by a government decision in Bhadau, 2065 B.S. The rehabilitation program was implemented in 12 districts of the far-west and mid-west regions of the country.
