KATHMANDU, June 8: The situation has become tense in Banchare Danda of Nuwakot after the locals obstructed trucks from dumping garbage at the landfill site today. The police mobilized at the site fired six rounds of tear gas canisters to control the agitated locals who were obstructing the dumping process, according to a source.
The locals also pelted stones injuring as many as 10 police personnel. So far, police have taken 18 locals in control. According to a police official, the garbage was not allowed to be dumped at the landfill site by the locals.

Earlier, in a meeting held on Monday, Minister for Urban Development, Ram Kumari Jhakri, Mayor of Kathmandu Balen Shah, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, Deputy Mayor of Lalitpur Manjali Shakya and chairpersons and mayors and officials of the rural municipalities and municipalities concerned agreed to manage the Kathmandu Valley’s waste at Banchare Danda landfill site.
According to the agreement reached, the garbage should be covered with soil up to 15 cm high after dumping, biological treatment method should be implemented within 10 days on the recommendation of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology to remove odor, garbage collection should be classified, land acquisition process should be started, construction of five local roads should be completed within a year, local river control, temple and community building should be constructed and tree planting should be initiated.
