KATHMANDU, June 12: Experts in the field of post-disaster recovery and reconstruction have prompted the federal and local governments to cooperate with each other for durable and inclusive post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction in Nepal.

A South Asian seminar on disaster management, reconstruction, energy, and climate change concluded on Tuesday in the capital, announcing a seven-point declaration asking the government to take necessary measures to ensure durable reconstruction.

Speaking at the function, chief executive officer (CEO) at the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), Sushil Gyewali claimed that one of the major achievements in the reconstruction in Nepal was the transfer of ownership and responsibilities of reconstruction to the local governments. “The reconstruction model followed by Nepal where the local governments were handed the ownership of the reconstruction can be a good model for other countries to follow,” he said.

At the program, experts from the field of post-disaster relief and reconstruction encouraged the associations of the local bodies to build their own policies and tactics in line with the national framework of reconstruction.

Similarly, the seminar also urged the local governments to get involved in the fight against climate change.

The program was jointly organized by the NRA, the National Association of Rural Municipality in Nepal, the Municipal Association of Nepal, United Cities and Local Governments, and the European Union. The two-day long seminar was inaugurated by the Minister of Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa on Monday.
