Minister bats for 'positive regulations' on freedom of speech

KATHMANDU, July 8: Minister for Information and Technology, Gokul Baskota said that the country needed to regulate social media and online portals through necessary laws.



Speaking at the House of Representatives, Baskota said that the government was they were working on the same.  “This is a positive regulation, not a way to impede right to expression or bring totalitarian regime. However, it is crucial to know who’s posting what about the state, the president, prime minister or established figures of the society.”

He added that no profession or business was above the law and that the press freedom needed to adhere to it. “It is high time that those authors are responsible and accountable to what they write or post,” Baskota said adding that the government had no intent in censoring media. “However, we want all of them to stay below the law.”
