KATHMANDU, May 16: President Bidya Devi Bhandari presented the government's annual policies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year 2020/21 in a joint meeting of the federal parliament-- the House of Representatives and the National Assembly on Friday.

The policies and programs for the next fiscal year direct the annual budget amid this global crisis created by COVID-19. At the same time, many were eagerly waiting to see how she would present herself, as she had courted controversy after she used the term 'Mero Sarkar' (my government) instead of the Nepal Government while presenting the government’s policies last year.

She, however, did not utter 'Mero Sarkar' during her address. Instead, she used `yo Sarkar/ yas sarkar' (this government).

President Bhandari repeatedly used the term my government last year, dragging herself into controversy as this was the first time a president had used that phrase after the country embraced a republican system in 2008.

Critics said that the use of the phrase 'mero sarkar' by the president of Republic Nepal was akin to its usage by former monarchs in parliament and that this indicated her desire to be like the royals.
